There was something delicate about her. In a strange way. Not delicate like a flower petal or dainty paper cutout. Not delicate like a ceramic plate that could fall and break to pieces. Not fragile. No, she definitely wasn't fragile. But there was something delicate about her. Like moss on a rock. Softly making its presence felt on the hard surface.
An intricacy in the way the shades of velvety green merged, remaining distinct and yet so perfectly blended into the grey-brown of the rock. There was a gentility to her delicateness, in the way she unobtrusively stood out in her surroundings.
By being delicate in her way, she destroyed every notion of the word – she wasn't frail or fragile, not breakable or brittle. No, she was delicate and strong. Powerful, in the non-dominating way. What would break most people, like rain can bend plants and destroy flowers, didn't rattle her. Like moss, she stands her ground, only becoming slippery enough that other people may lose their footing, without her gentle beauty deteriorating.
While other plants had to try to stand out with their flowers and multicoloured leaves, there was a simplicity in the lack of effort the moss required to be beautiful.
And think about it. What would your garden be without moss?
